People who love to go tanning mostly go to tanning salons nowadays where they can make use of pro tanning beds or sunless tanning methods to get a nice tan going.

Some, however, still opt to do it the natural way and head for the beach instead for some fun under the sun.

Now natural sunlight is good for our tanning health in more ways than one, but there are some facts about it that you need to know about before spending way too much time outdoors.

The sunlight that reaches us has ultraviolet light, which is actually a form of electromagnetic radiation produced as part of the light spectrum by the sun. It has two forms, namely UVA and UVB. There is actually a third form, called UVC, but this doesn’t reach the Earth, as the planet’s atmosphere blocks it.


UVA rays, which are 20 times more abundant than UVB rays, is the type of ultraviolet light that we’re most commonly exposed to. It is not affected by a change in altitude or weather, and is present every single day of the year. They can also go through windows and therefore reach us even when we’re indoors. It penetrates light clothing as well.

While UVA does not really cause sunburn, it is often blamed for aging, as it penetrates deep into skin layers, causing wrinkling and leathering of the skin.

UVB rays, on the other hand, are sometimes called “tanning rays�?, for the most obvious of reasons: it is the form of ultraviolet light that stimulates the melanocyte cell to produce the brown pigment melanin. In other words, UVB rays cause tanning, which in turn is the human body’s natural method of protecting itself from the effects of ultraviolet radiation.

Sunburn is also associated with overexposure to UVB rays. They, however, provide one major health benefit: they help the body with normal vitamin D production. This helps keep our skeleton strong, boosts our immune system, and promotes the absorption of nutrients.

As with everything in life, our exposure to these UV rays should always be in moderation, especially for those who love to go sun tanning. Unlike when we’re using a tanning bed, we cannot control the amount of UV rays that hit our body from the sun. This is why it’s important not to stay too long underneath the sun, lest you want to suffer some serious sunburn.

It is also absolutely vital that every time we go for tanning sessions under the sun, we should never forget to apply sunscreens that say “broad-spectrum”, as they help protect our skin from both UVA and UVB rays. Whether it’s in lotion, gel, cream or ointment form, sunscreen makes it possible for us to get a nice tan and protect our skin from the harsh effects of the sun at the same time.
